Physical characteristics and invulnerability to erosion

Physical Diversity Coastal shorelines differ markedly in physical characteristics and in vulnerability to erosion. Erosion rate over time at a given point along the shoreline depends on factors such as:
  • direction of littoral drift
  • inlet dynamics
  • sand supply
  • short- and long-term climate fluctuations
  • gradient of submerged ocean or lake bottom
  • relative mean sea level
  • human actions affecting shoreline processes
